Pomegranate Wonderful

Wonderful Pomegranate

The Wonderful Pomegranate – botanical name, Punica granatum cultivar “WONDERFUL” – bears very large fruit with glossy skin that turns bright red when ripe. The arils (seed pods) are dark red in colour and staining, they are very juicy and of high quality. The fruit are seeded, sweet-sour and semi-hard, and has an exceptional, subtle sweet/tart taste with an almost wine-like character.

The fruit ripens from March to April and is excellent for eating, juicing and exporting. This fruit tree is one of the most widely planted cultivars in the world and grows to about 3m by 3m. It is a very strong, upright growing plant, and a heavy bearer that bears fruit from a very young age.

Pomegranates do very well in Mediterranean type environments. They are sensitive to wind. Tolerant of moderate frost only. Older, well-established plants will tolerate heavy frost for short periods of time. They have shallow, spreading roots making for great small garden trees.
