Abate Fettel is a moderately vigorous, upright grower with an average production of elongated fruit with a long neck. The creamy coloured flesh is slightly crispy with a melting, aromatic, sweet honey flavour. It is very popular in Italy, where it is seen as a special delicacy. The fruit ripens from late January to early February and is very good for fresh eating as well as baking. Pears make excellent topiary and espalier specimens and are also good in pots if watered regularly. Pear ‘Abate Fettel’ is not self-pollinating and needs to be cross-pollinated ‘Buerre Bosch’, ‘Bon Chretien’ or ‘Forelle’.
