Basella alba ‘Rubra’

Malabar / Ceylon Spinach

An edible, perennial soft-stemmed vine with thick semi-succulent leaves.  Long clusters of pinkish-white flowers are followed by juicy, purple-black berries.  The leaves have a mild peppery taste and are used widely in the tropics as a substitute for  spinach.  They can also be eaten raw and used in salads. It is very fast growing and can also be grown in beds or large pots and containers against a trellis or some form of support.
