The Tamarillo is a fast-growing, small tree that bears oval fruit with a thick skin that turns shiny red when it ripens from late summer to autumn. The flesh is firm with a tart to mildly sweet taste with savoury undertones. The fruit can be eaten fresh, used in fruit salad or to make jam, jelly or a delicious chutney. The tree has a single upright stem that spreads into a canopy with large, lush soft leaves. The root system is shallow and non-invasive.
