Heritage Day 2016

In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, former President Nelson Mandela stated:

“When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.”

This day allows us to celebrate being South Africans, irrespective of our varying religions, cultures, races, sexual orientations and political affiliations. A day to be South African and to revel in the beauty of that fact. Relish in the beautiful weather, the ability to gather with friends, to cook delicious food, to learn about different cultures, to have interesting conversations and enjoy outdoor activities.

What to do this Heritage Day

Get your garden and home ready for summer:
Pop into Lifestyle Home Garden and find the best variety of garden and home products for the sprucing up, spring clean, outdoor refresh and garden scenery that you need to make your garden and home the environment that you want to spend the upcoming sunny summer days relishing in.

Remove all dead plants and debris, fertilise your plants and lawn, plant new summer flowering annuals, add a new pot and painting here and there with a few new ornaments, and fix up those little handy man jobs that have been awaiting your time.

A refresh and brighten up of your home and garden will not only make your living environment look better but you will get your hands dirty and get involved, which will make you feel enthused and ready for the summer season!

Be refreshed:
Invite over some interesting guests for a summer day gathering.
The kind of people that you need to reconnect with or who you can learn something from – embrace diversity and be enthralled by the brilliance of other people.

Slice some strawberries and pick some fresh mint, throw into a big jug of ice water and serve with a refreshing platter of carrot sticks, cucumber pieces, tomatoes, cheese & olive skewers and a hummus or balsamic vinegar dip whilst you get the braai on the go!

Make a variety of veggie and meat-loving options to entice your guests and encourage interesting conversation over a delicious meal. Make something different and try our braaibroodjie recipe below to pair with your meal. Fresh fruit and ice cream to top it all off just perfectly and encourage everyone to take a dip in the pool to cool off (or freeze) after a wonderful day of indulgence.
Use this refresh to help you get ready for the summer season and to take on the last few months of the year with vigour!

Make a Braaibroodjie
As they say “voor ek jou oopmond soen, sê vir my kan jy braaibroodjies maak?!”

The braaibroodjie (braaied toasted sandwich) is the perfect addition to any braai – as a breakfast braai, compliment to the main meat attraction or an afternoon snack whilst the evening braai is being prepared: https://lifestyle.co.za/lifestyle-blog/make-a-braaibroodjie

Let us celebrate our common roots by having a braai on Heritage Day – as Desmond Tutu said: “It’s a fantastic thing, a very simple idea … just South Africans doing one thing together, and recognising that we are a fantastic nation.”
