Meet our July Guest Gardener!
Welcome to this month’s edition of our Guest Gardener. Sarah Wilding is a plant enthusiast and avid home gardener, making the most of the space she has in her home to produce a green, magical environment.
She lives in Northcliff in a home with her family.
Her Instagram accounts are beautifully curated and her photos true works of art – give her a follow on the following account: The_Green_Windowsill
We asked Sarah how she got into gardening?
‘I purchased a Venus Fly Trap from Lifestyle at the beginning of the year, as I had them as a young girl, but I never managed to keep them alive (I didn’t think to google care tips back then on my late father’s skedonk of a Pc) I think its demise was largely to do with under watering it with tap water and attempting to get the plant to “eat” my fingers (a big no-no for carnivorous plants!)’
After that first purchase, she scrolled through Instagram and watched Youtube videos for hours, looking for people living in their own green paradise.
Sarah spends about 2 hours per week pruning, dusting and watering her indoor plants for varying lengths of time depending on the season. She will make space for plants, and buys plants around 3 times a month!
We’re suitably impressed!
Lifestyle is her favourite place to buy plants. ‘The atmosphere is just fantastic, When I’m down in the dumps, I drive myself off there and spend ages soaking up the fresh and fragrant air. I love this and it’s become my happy place and part of my routine.’
When asked why she loves her non-traditional plant space, she says ”I personally think there is nothing more energising and grounding than opening your eyes to your own little forest, we have lost touch with nature and I believe having a tiny fiddle fig next to your bed or a succulent on your desk at work can make a huge difference to your mood in the long run. Plants make people happy. You cannot have a bad day when you’re looking at plants! I say this with a fair warning however, you can never just have one!”
Social media has been a big influence on Sarah, alongside her move back to Joburg from a very remote area on the East Coast. Her partner spoils her with plants occasionally, even though she admits to being the one to choose the plants!
