February in Your Garden

Your February Gardening Guide

Its time to get garden loving this month of love!

This February it’s all about TLC (tender loving care) for those special people in your life and of course

General February Garden Tasks

  • Give your Summer flowering shrubs a light pruning to tidy them up – and if you experienced hail damage, cut away damaged leaves and flowers to allow for fresh new blooms to be produced
  • Check and spray all susceptible plants for powdery mildew, fungus and redspidermite – our inside information can assist with suggestions on what products to use
  • Water plants deeply when its not raining in order to encourage roots to grow down deeper, this also keeps roots cooler and improves the plants’ ability to withstand drought (always remember to adhere to water restrictions in place – if you live in a different region to Johannesburg)
  • Feed Azaleas, Camellias and Hellebores now. Then mulch with compost and water well to give them a yearly growth boost
  • Feed fruit trees with a 6:1:5 or a 3:1:5 fertiliser
  • Give your roses a light prune, fertilise with an 8:1:5 to boost a last flush of flowers, water deeply and maintain a layer of mulch
  • Top up mulch in garden beds where needed to keep the soil cool during the hotter months – visit our Plant Smart range adjacent to our main tills for a range of mulch options, or otherwise ask a sales advisor for assistance in choosing the best option for you
